Kukui nuts (also called Lumbang nuts) are produced by the kukui - or "candlenut" - tree, which is the state tree of Hawaii.
They are native to Southeast Asia and are believed to have been brought to the Hawaiian Islands by early Polynesian settlers.
The tree is called "candlenut" because the Polynesians would light the oil inside the nuts to create lighting at nighttime.
They also used kukui nut oil to moisturize their skin and hair.
